Scanned images (TIF format) of West Virginia mine maps are now available online. If you know the 6-digit number of the document you need, proceed to the download site at (new location): http://downloads.wvgs.wvnet.edu/minemaps/. Click here to view a sample image (547 K). Note these map images are large and may take some time to download.

File names: Each image file name consists of an eight-digit number with the .tif file extension. The first six digits are the document number. Some mines were photographed in multiple images, called scenes. Scene numbers are the last two trailing numbers of the file name. Make sure you download each scene. The images are organized into folders named by the first 3 digits of the document number.

Index and Help: A Microsoft excel version of the West Virginia Mine Map Index is now available in zipped format for download.  Note this is a large file (2.7 MB zipped and 11.4 MB when unzipped.) and may take some time to download. Use this link to download the WV Mine Map Index. A viewer for Microsoft Excel files is available from the Microsoft site. Download Excel Viewer. You can also visit the Interactive Coal Bed GIS site to obtain document numbers for some parts of the state.
